What is the selection rate for SMSGT? ›

The Air Force's selection rate for promotions to technical sergeant neared 20 percent in 2024, bouncing back from historically low rates the previous two years while still trailing the highs of the late 2010s. Out of 35,328 eligible staff sergeants, 6,914 were tapped for promotion, a rate of 19.57 percent.

Promotion to Master Sergeant.

Technical Sergeants may be promotion eligible to Master Sergeant upon completion of eight years of time in service and 24 months of time in grade. The PECD for promotion to Master Sergeant is 30 November.

SMSgts normally operate at the operational level of leadership. Promotion to senior master sergeant is the most difficult enlisted promotion to attain in the Air Force and Space Force. It is the second enlisted grade in which results of a central promotion board is the only factor in selection for promotion.

To be promoted to Sergeant, soldiers must serve thirty-six months of service and months of time in grade; although, commanders can waive the requirement for time in service in light of consistent good performance of soldiers while serving in lower ranks.

To be promoted to the next rank, Technical Sergeant (E-6), you will have to have a minimum of 5 years of service time, spent more than 23 months in your previous rank, and have achieved a 7-skill level. The average duty time before becoming a Technical Sergeant is around 12 years.

Service members of ranks airman basic through airman 1st class may stay in for 10 years without promotion before they're forced out of the Air Force, senior airmen have 12 years, staff sergeants 22 years, technical sergeants 24 years, master sergeants 26 years and senior master sergeants 28 years.

Demotion Authority

AFI36-2502, Enlisted Airman Promotion/Demotion Programs, provides guidance and procedures on demoting enlisted Airmen. Under this instruction, a group commander, or equivalent level commander (e.g. senior Air Force officer in the grade of colonel), may demote MSgts and below.
