Wesley Chapel boys soccer hosts Nature Coast, 6 p.m.. Sports Reporter. The Bulldogs have been habitually slow starters this season. They knew if they fell behind Green Cove Springs’ Clay, with 230-pound running back Aundre Carter, they would be in trouble. The Bulldogs got off to perhaps their best start of the season. The offensive first play of the game, Elijah Thomas broke through the middle of the Blue Devils’ defense and raced 51 yards to setup the Bulldogs deep in Blue Devils’ territory. A completion to Cartrel Strong went for 18 more yards and then a swing pass to Jaquan Sheppard scored an 8-yard touchdown. The point-after missed. The Blue Devils answered with a big kick return but. The Centennial Middle School boys soccer team made the trek out to Land O’ Lakes on Nov. 16 to face Charles S. Rushe Middle School on their home turf, and though the Cyclones waged a tight, pressure-filled battle late in the game, ultimately it was Rushe that prevailed. From the outset, Centennial Middle’s defense skills were put to the test, as Rushe rushed the Cyclones backfield and kept the ball on Centennial Middle real estate with relentless pressure. Within the first 20 seconds, goalie Cody Tadlock was earning his figurative paycheck, blocking Rushe shots repeatedly while his teammates fought to get the ball out of the danger zone. Rushe scored after a minute and a half, and. ➤ZHS FOOTBALL: See Page 4B & 5B. ➤BOYS SOCCER: See Page 6B. Sports Reporter. BY DALE BLISS Sports Reporter. During the time America was being developed, shuffleboard matches were being played throughout the colonies. It was a popular game with English soldiers and the colonists. In the Crucible, Arthur Miller wrote about shuffleboard being played in the “Bridget Bishop’s Tavern” as early as 1692. The game soon became fascinating to the public. It was questioned as to whether shuffleboard was a game or a skill. After careful consideration a judge ruled that shuffleboard was a game of skill. Table shuffleboard demanded its place in New York City along with baseball and prizefighting, by 1897. During World War II, shuffleboard again made its place during this era. Having such diversity with skill, competitiveness and being a game offered to adolescence as well as adults it became an essential sport for its time. Ginny Chandler, an 8-year veteran of the sport of shuffleboard said with a gleaming smile, “I play all over the. ➤SHUFFLEBOARD: See Page 10B. REVolution 4 golf CaRt. BY JIM GENIA. On the Bulldogs next offensive play, Thomas broke another big run, a 53-yarder. A jump ball to Tre’Pavis Mobley made for a 16-yard touchdown and a twopoint conversion by Mobley made it 14-3 Bulldogs early in the first quarter. The fear was not if but when the Blue Devils and 1,800-yard rusher Carter would get going. It would not be early as Sterlin Williams bagged him for a loss on the next Clay drive and the Blue Devils went three-and-out. The Bulldogs were keyed in on Carter. On the next Blue Devils’ possession Nyjohn Moody read a swing pass to Carter and cut his legs out from under him for a 5-yard loss, forcing a punt. Carter, who’d gained 283 yards in a win over Hernando the week prior, was held to four carries for 4 yards on the first three possessions. Kameron Allen shut down the Blue Devils’ fourth drive with a pass deflection but the first momentum swing toward Clay would occur next. On a. Shuffleboard heats up at Zephyrhills Shuffleboard Club. Right: Clay’s monstrous running back Aundre Carter, often times took a whole crew of Bulldogs to bring him down.. ➤ZHS FOOTBALL: From Page 1B fourth-and-five, the Bulldogs lined up to punt but Dakari Augustin would block it and give the Blue Devils’ offense the ball at the Bulldogs’ 12yard line. One play, a Caleb Easton completion to Cedrick Brown made it a 14-10 Bulldogs’ lead with 10 minutes left in the half. The Bulldogs answered when return specialist Strong took the ensuing kickoff 76-yards for a touchdown. Bulldogs back on top 21-10. Up to that point, Carter had just six carries for 18 yards. The NFL-sized running back could only be held down for so long. On the Blue Devils’ next drive, Carter had seven carriers. for 39 yards with a 5-yard touchdown run to cap it. Quarterback Charles Harrison III showed just why the Bulldogs have been so successful this season. Neither he nor the rest of the Bulldogs ever quit. On the ensuing drive, a 31-yard completion to Strong kept the chains moving and then on a third-and-goal from the 10, Harrison did what he’s done all season, find a way. Harrison dropped back to pass, found no one open, then escaped to his right to avoid pressure, cut back to the left to avoid more pressure and then came back to his right again and scored on a 10-yard run to make it 28-17 with just two minutes left in the half. Carter and the Blue Devils were starting to get it going,. however. On the seventh play of the ensuing drive, Carter plowed through the Bulldogs’ defense and took it in from 37 yards out. The Bulldogs managed to get into field goal range with just seconds to work with. A head’s up play by Mobley to get out of bounds with two-tenths of a second left on the clock, setup a 33-yard field goal attempt but it was blocked. The question remained, how would each team respond in the second half. The Bulldogs had held Carter in check but led by just four points. The Blue Devils received the third quarter kickoff and showed just why they have 13 playoff wins and six road playoff wins in the last 5 years. On a 10-play drive that covered 62. Wishing you a. Right: Zac Masci (40) buries his head into the midsection of 230-pound running back Aundre Carter to make the stop.. We’re the same company with a new name!. NOW. Coastal Furniture & Mattress yards, Carter took eight carries for 61 yards and a 10-yard touchdown to cap it and take the lead for the first time. The Bulldogs got to midfield but turned the ball over on downs. The Blue Devils came back and hit Ajay Belanger for a 20-yard touchdown. The Blue Devils now led 38-28 and had scored three unanswered touchdowns. The bleeding would continue. A Bulldogs’ three-andout gave it back to the Blue Devils, who again fed Carter. This time it would be just one play, a 58-yard touchdown run by Carter to make it four unanswered touchdowns for the Blue Devils. The Bulldogs’ offense would go three-and-out again and again give it back to the Blue Devils. This time the Blue Devils would tap Christian Swilley for the carry and Swilley would break free for a 50-yard touchdown with 1:34 left in the third quarter. The quarter could not have been more disastrous for the Bulldogs with 35 unanswered points, going back to the second quarter and the hulking Carter demoralizing and grinding down the Bulldogs’ defense. It seemed as if all was lost. It would have been very easy for the Bulldogs to roll over and yield to what was a superior team that now led 52-28. Yielding and rolling over are not in the Bulldogs’ character. “We’ve been resilient all year,” head coach Nick Carroll said. “It’s what we preach to them and it’s a culture we’re trying to instill in these kids.” Culture instilled. With just 11 seconds left in the third quarter, the Bulldogs gained their first, first down of the half. A 39-yard completion to Sheppard set the Bulldogs up at the 1-yard line and Zac Masci took it in for a touchdown. Two plays into the next Clay drive, Moody forced a fumbled and Masci made the recovery. The Bulldogs worked down field, aided by a personal foul and a pass interference penalty. On a second-and-seven from the 11-yard line, Carroll made the perfect play call an inside pitch to backup tight end Bryce Sanders and it went for a touchdown to pull to within 10 points of Clay with 8:41. remaining. Williams stopped the ensuing Clay drive on a fourth-and-five, making solo tackle on Carter, stopping him for a 2-yard gain and forcing a turnover on downs. Harrison and the Bulldogs got it going again, hitting Mobley on a 30-yard completion. A personal foul penalty set the Bulldogs up at the Blue Devils’ 15-yard line. Harrison missed Tyrese Wigfall on a throw but the very next play, found him and Wigfall made one defender miss and scooted into the end zone for 15-yard touchdown. Daniel Chacon’s extra point cut the lead to 52-49, just a field goal difference after trailing by 24 late in the third quarter. The Bulldogs tried for an onside kick and Chacon’s kick was perfect, taking a high hop but the Blue Devils were able to recover it. All the Blue Devils had to do was burn off the last 3:44 to escape with a win. A gaping hole off the left side, let Carter pickup 17 yards and a first down. On a third-and-three, Carter broke a 14-yarder for a first down. Brown then went for 6 yards and another first down. It was enough. Two more plays and the Blue Devils were in position to kneel on third down and bleed out the rest of the clock. The Bulldogs’ fourth-quarter rally would end right there, as well as their hopes to advance. Still, it was a Herculean effort from a team that could have easily faded. The Bulldogs burned bright on their way out, a testament to their character. “These guys believed in the process,” Carroll said. “I’m very proud of this effort.” The sting of being so close had to hurt but the character the Bulldogs showed by not giving up is reason for them to hold their heads high. The Bulldogs answered a 28-0 third quarter fallout with a 21-0 fourth-quarter finish. Thomas would finish with 8 carries for 143 yards, pushing him over 1,000 for the season. Harrison, already over 2,000 yards passing on the season went 18-for-29 for 240 yards and four passing touchdowns, with one rushing touchdown. Sheppard caught four passes for 51 yards and a score, pushing his season total past. 750 yards to lead the team. Mobley had six catches for 87 yards and a score, pushing his season total over 600 yards. Strong added four catches for 60 yards, pushing him past 400 yards on the season.. 813-395-5920. Working in tandem, Tanner Miller and Gabriel Hernandez made their own incursion into enemy territory. But they were beaten back, and the Ravens put another one into the Cyclones’ goal. “Just keep pressuring the ball,” said coach J.T. Kirk to his wards during a water break. With a constant stream of subs, he kept his players fresh, and soon Adan Hernandez had Rushe sprinting back to defend their own goal, while Carson Deloretto worked some backfield magic with his defensive footwork. Still, Rushe’s pressure was ever-present, and when they found passing lanes down the middle, they were able to put the ball in Centennial’s net. Though Tyler Tjader and Daniel Hernandez made furious attempts to put the Cyclones on the scoreboard, when the halftime buzzer sounded it was 7-0 in favor of Rushe. “If you play like that the whole game, we’ll be okay,” said coach Kirk on Centennial’s ramped-up aggression that materialized in the. waning minutes of the first half. “All that pressure opened up opportunities.” “Cody, you did an awesome job blocking all those hard shots,” coach Kirk told his goalie, who now sat on the bench with ice on his knee. Deloretto donned a goalie jersey and took his place on the field for the second half. Heeding their coach’s words on maintaining the level of pressure they’d put on Rushe at the end of the first half, Centennial began forcing their foe to work hard at keeping their goal safe. And thanks to the offensive drives of Michael Selner, Hernandez and Ira Mattice, the Cyclones nearly scored. But once the Ravens got their eighth goal into Centennial’s net it was all over. “If they play like they did in the 20 minutes, I think we could be competitive with any team in the league,” said coach Kirk, who was pleased with the effort his team had put forth late. He added, “We’ve only been together a couple of weeks, but the growth I’ve seen in those two weeks we’ve been together has been great.” Next up for the Cyclones is a home game against Pine View on Nov. 28..

(21) Zephyrhills News | Thursday, November 23, 2017 7 B. A real magical evening at ZHS. Magician Steve Marshall calls for assistance from an audience member.. ZHS Drama Club hosted an evening with Magician Steve Marshall BY DALE BLISS News Reporter. “If you see someone without a smile give them one of yours,” the dual-continent worldrenowned Magician Steve Marshall illuminated. This is the belief that this magician has lived by, believed and did his paramount to carry out since he was a little boy. There was real magic in the air, on the stage and in the gym at Zephyrhills High School as the drama club presented Steve Marshall’s Magic Show. Between the ooohhhs and aaahhhs were unbelievable feats of magic tricks that could only be known by the fabulous Tokyo famed magician himself. Amid the loud thunderous applause for every magical illusion presented by Marshall the audience was sitting on the edges of their seats waiting for the next trick to be accomplished by the principal of his sleight of hand. Marshall came back in time to his old alma mater, Zephyrhills High School. The illusionist graduated from ZHS in 1983. Alumni Marshall may have had a moment of déjà vu because 35 years ago he performed magic shows on the very stage he performed on. “It is wonderful to be able to share the gift that you have been given with other people and to give them moments of happiness with that gift,” the performer said with a tender cheerfulness in his tone. At the young age of only 8 years old, the world-famous magician received a Marshall Brodien TV Magic Set as a Christmas gift. That was it. “I knew then that is what I wanted to do when I grew up,” said the magic maker. Tokyo did not know then that this little boy. DALE BLISS. would grow up to perform on its continent, not the two years that he planned to perform in Japan for Disney Land Tokyo, but for the next 20 years. As a child he performed at senior centers and mobile home parks. With great reflection, the dual continent performer of magic chatted, “This is where it all began,” as he gazed over the stage in the ZHS gym, that he had not seen since 1983 when he graduated. “What is normal in our home, with my wife and two daughters, is not normal in most homes,” Marshall illuminated with a sparkle in his eyes. “When my daughters come home from school and I have their mom floating in the air they just come in, let us know they’re home and then go do what they do when they get home, get a snack and get to their homework or play for a while,” the mysterious magician said. Finnigan Cole came to the magic show with his dad. The young lad said with eyes sparkling, “I can’t figure out how he does the magic tricks.” “It’s hard to do,” Eli Morel said. This magician enthusiast was sitting up front with his sister and grandparents. After graduating high school, it was on to Ringling Brothers Clown College. Marshal performed as a show clown for 5 years and here is where he became a professional magician. “As the audience is watching me I am watching them. If I can give them some happiness, even for just an instant, I feel like I have had a success. To be able to put a smile on someone’s face or make them laugh, even for just a few minutes, gives me an assurance that I successfully completed my job,” Marshall said with sincerity and a soft kindness in his voice. The host for the evening, David Rel Dorso, disguises himself as a geometry teacher by day but at night he changes into a drama coach. Rel Dorso has been with ZHS since 2007. During high school is when the acting bug caught the geometry instructor. “I tended to work in the technical part of the plays but I did do some. acting,” explained Rel Dorso. After studying theater from the University of South Florida and graduating in the 70s Rel Dorso remained in retail management for 30 years. But once again the acting bug guided him to become a teacher and then on to offering himself as the drama coach for Zephyrhills High School. Although the retail management graduate enjoys acting he says he still prefers being a techie. “I enjoy working backstage with the lights, sound and set construction.” “The proceeds from the show will go to the Zephyrhills High drama club and will be shared with the general fund,” Rel Dorso said. These monies collected will be used to send students to theatrical events such as the Florida State Thespian Festival and to help fund future productions. If enough money is raised from the evening of magic, equipment replacement is being highly considered. Several drama students from ZHS have maintained their dream, stead- ied their course and gone on to become actors and performers. These performances include the Tampa Bay Renaissance Festival, Howl O Scream, Scream A Geddon and other acting jobs.. Above: Finnigan Cole helps Magician Steve Marshall with a magic trick. Left: Magician Steve Marshall performs a rope trick. There are approximately 70 to 80 students in the drama club making it one of the largest clubs in the school. “Magic is my vehicle to perform,” reflected the mysterious magician. “Being able to live and share my dream is such a treasure to me. Performing here tonight is my way of being able to give back to a place that gave to me,” concluded Marshall.. Lamplighter. FURNITURE COMPANY, INC..
